St Louis at Dallas

The Cowboys have fought hard all the way to Week 17, and get up Sunday morning still in with a shout at the playoffs if things go their way. And even if they don't, they'll still put on a show against the ruins of the Greatest Show on Turf. Things started badly for the Rams this year with a loss at San Francisco, and then got steadily worse, with the loss through illness of head coach Mike Martz and now, six loses from the past seven games. Can the Rams salvage something in the final game of the 2005 season?

Washington at Philadelphia

What an amazing job Joe Gibbs has done in the second season of his Second Coming at Washington. After something of a trough in the middle part of the season, Gibbs had his team revert to the 'Hogs' style offense that he used at Washington twenty years ago, and how it's paid off. Washington has won its last four straight, and if they can win at Philly, the Skins are back in the playoffs. Philadelphia is 6-9 for the season, but the Eagles are still playing tough despite the personnel crises they've suffered. When the teams met at Washington on November 6, the Redskins won 17-10, snapping a seven game Eagles winning streak over Washington.

Chicago at Minnesota

Chicago clenched the NFC North on Christmas Day at Lambeau Field with a 24-17 win, the Bears' first divisional title in four years. For Minnesota, a six game winning streak and a desperate charge for the playoffs wasn't quite enough, the Vikings second straight loss, against Baltimore on Christmas Day, meant that Minnesota won't be going to the playoffs and all that's left to play for is pride. When the teams met at Soldier Field in October, the Bears whipped the Vikings 28-3, but they Bears haven't won at the Metrodome since 2001.

Tennessee at Jacksonville

Jacksonville starting quarterback Byron Leftwich has been cleared to return for the Jaguars' season finale at home against Tennessee - the question is, does coach Jack Del Rio want Leftwich back? David Garrard has been solid as a rock in Leftwich's absense, which lasted for four weeks following a broken bone in the ankle sustained against Arizona, and coach Del Rio has to weigh up his options carefully. Jacksonville's place in the playoffs is assured, while Tennessee is just playing out the string. Billy Volek came on for the injured Steve McNair last week against Miami - head coach Jeff Fisher has not announced his starter for the Jacksonville game at time of writing.

Houston at San Francisco

Cynics have been calling this the Bush Bowl, because the loser ostensibly has more to gain than the winner - first choice in next year's draft, meaning USC rushing phenom Reggie Bush. However, the form lines of both teams are not those of teams mailing it in - Houston came good against the odds two weeks ago against Arizona, while the Niners are coming off the first ever victory for rookie quarterback Alex Smith, a four point win over St Louis.

Seattle at Green Bay

Mike Holmgren returns to Seattle this weekend to see the Empire he rebuilt in ruins. Holmgren led Green Bay back to the Promised Land in the 'nineties, getting to two straight Super Bowls and winning one. Holmgren has taken a while for that magic to work at Seattle, but it's working pretty well now, as Seattle takes an NFL best eleven game winning streak to Green Bay on its final outing of the season. The Packer are 3-12 for the season, Green Bay's last loss coming on Christmas Day itself, at Lambeau, against Chicago.

New Orleans at Tampa Bay

They had to sweat to do it, but the Buccaneers held out last weekend to beat Atlanta in overtime with a field goal. That puts the Buccaneers in control at the top of the NFC South, and all they have to do now is beat the Saints and the South is theirs once more. To stop them, the Saints must stop the Cadillac - rookie Carnell 'Cadillac' Williams has been the catalyst in the Buccaneer revival, and if he has another big day, that will surely hand the Saints their fifth straight loss. The teams met four weeks ago on December 4 at Baton Rogue, the Bucs winning 10-3.

Miami at New England

Back in Week 1, the closing game for Week 17 at Foxboro looked like a formality, with the Fins being served like sushi before the serious work of chasing that fourth Super Bowl began. But now those amazing Dolphins, with nothing to play for, ride into Massachusetts on a five game winning streak, eager for their first win at Foxboro since 1999. After a season fraught with injuries to key personnel, the mojo has returned to New England along with the Patriots' starters, and they are once again the most feared team in the League.

Detroit at Pittsburgh

After a three game losing streak, Pittsburgh returned to traditional values - running the football and tackling that hurts - in an attempt to make it to the playoffs. A three game winning streak later, where the opposition has only managed twelve points in total, and only the Lions now stand in the Steelers' way. The Lions are 5-12 but are coming off their second road win of the season, 13-12 against New Orleans at San Antonio. The win makes it likely that Joey Harrington will start at quarterback once more for the Lions - what a lot a win at Heinz Field would do for Joey's continued employment.

Cincinnati at Kansas City

It's a fascinating matchup between these two NFC South rivals with Carolina's playoff future at stake. Although Carolina and Atlanta both lost last week, the Panthers fate still remains under their own control. No such luxury for Atlanta, which has failed to make the playoffs after being one game away from the Super Bowl last year. What the Falcons would like to do, however, is re-assert their traditional dominance over Carolina - Carolina's 24-6 over Atlanta at the start of December was only the Panthers' second win over the Falcons in eleven attempts.
